REVIEW: ALICE COOPER, MARILYN MANSON, & PICTURE ME BROKEN 6/3/2013
Gweedo

Every year, Red Rocks Amphitheatre brings great shows to Colorado. Many artists love playing there, and the fans love seeing them there as well. This fine evening brought together an odd duo. Old meets modern. Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson decided to hit the road with Picture Me Broken in tow. This was a great line up that was accompanied by a nice evening. The sun was just going down with a cool breeze. There were a good number of t-shirts for sale and a decent tour t-shirt. Alice Cooper had his latest CD out signed. The general admission was up front. It did not seem like very many people were there to start. One of the security staff mentioned that ticket sales were not great.

I was very interested to see what Picture Me Broken was all about. An opener was never listed, so I did not know there was one until visiting the merch booth. They were a pleasant surprise out of Hollywood, CA. The biggest part of their stage was a nice looking, elaborate drumset helmed by Shaun Foist. Most notable was the beautiful, blonde, talented female singer, Brooklyn Allman. Also on stage were two shredding guitarists, Dante Phoenix and Jimmy Strimpel. It is unique that they did not have a bass guitarist. They played for about a half full Red Rocks. The crowd sat for the first song, but after that, they gained some instant fans. Their second song had much more energy, and a lot of people started standing. Picture Me Broken turned out to be a high energy heavy metal band. Brooklyn had a great voice that she was able to growl and sing cleanly with. She also had a fantastic mohawk that moved with her but never fell. They recorded footage of one song for a future music video. Their stage presence and image were good for an up and coming band. My favorite part of their show was their last song, which was a heavy cover of Heart's "Crazy On You". An army of roadies made quick work setting the stage for Marilyn Manson.

A three quarter full venue welcomed Marilyn Manson. This quickly grew into a packed three quarter as he played and more people wanted up front. There were a couple jack wagons moshing and trying to start fights on the small row behind me, even banging into women. I venture to say this is the best performance I have seen from Manson. It was definitely better than when he played with Rob Zombie in the fall of last year. They had a good sound, which is hard not to have at Red Rocks. He seemed in better shape and a little drunk. The stage constantly had fog all over and some cool props. One prop that was different from prior shows was a giant 12 foot chair that Manson almost fell off of. He had tons of crowd interaction while walking back and forth in the front row for almost every song. Lucky audience members got to grab and pose with Marilyn Manson. This is the most active and appreciative of the fans I've ever seen from him. There was a camera guy in his face the majority of the show, but I do not know what that was about. He had a lot of costume changes, per usual. There were spouts on the lighting that blew foam into the crowd. At the end, the keyboards were thrown to the ground and drummer Jason Sutter threw drum heads into the seats.

It was fantastic to see Alice Cooper at this venue. The crowd thinned a little bit, making it more enjoyable to watch. Alice came out with flares raining down. He was accompanied by his awesome band Ryan Roxie, Tommy Henriksen, and Orianthi on guitar, Chuck Garric on bass, and Glen Sobel on drums. Their performance seemed a little better than their fall 2012 show. Sobel had a cool drumset that was black with red accents. There was a great drum solo and instrumental in the middle of the show. Sobel's drum sticks shot little flares out of the tips. Ryan Roxie and Chuck Garric had some choreographed dance moves that were entertaining to watch. DJ was chewing so much gum it made my jaw hurt. Orianthi played with a lot more confidence and just shredded the guitar. Mr. Cooper had the same antics he was touring with before. He had a sword with Cooper money on it, threw out beads, and played with swords and whips. An addition was a creepy nurse with a brace that made appearances throughout the show. She would come by and stab him from time to time. Alice was put in a strait jacket and then did the disappearing act to turn into Frankenstein. He pulled out a python for one song and had it slither all over him. Also, a guillotine was brought out and cut Alice's head off. For the last song, "School's Out", big balloons were thrown in the crowd, and Cooper tried to stab any that came back on stage. As an encore and grand finale, they played "Eighteen" and Marilyn Manson came to partake. This was great and very unexpected. Manson did a good job, which is not surprising since he idolizes Alice Cooper.

As you can see, this was a show not to be missed. Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, and Picture Me Broken all played their best. $56 was a steal for this show. Red Rocks reached the biggest crowd during Manson. I'm glad I got introduced to Picture Me Broken. They were a good fit and definitely going to get bigger soon. Surprisingly, Cooper and Manson went well together, but it was not hard since they both strive to put on a performance which goes beyond just a live concert. I urge you to get out and support Picture Me Broken however you can and make sure to see this tour or at least Cooper and Manson individually. Though it is hard to have a bad show at Red Rocks, I am sure this tour is great regardless of the venue.
