REVIEW: BUCKCHERRY, AUTUMN BURN, & RED TIDE RISING - 5/27/2015

To the delight of many, Summit Music Hall hosted the rescheduled Buckcherry show! The original took place a few weeks prior with local bands Resonance and Lola Black. Unfortunately Buckcherry frontman, Josh Todd, was fighting a cold and had to bow out only three songs in. This time around attendees rocked out to Red Tide Rising, Autumn Burn, and Buckcherry. The shame was that not enough tickets were sold to open up the balcony. Red Tide Rising had some great merchandise and stuck around their booth all night making themselves known. What I really liked about their booth was that they had a cool signed drumhead and custom guitar picks. These are things that most local bands don’t get into. Buckcherry also had good merchandise out. With this tour, Buckcherry was offering Meet & Greets. Even with that they came out and signed any CDs you bought. Really nice guys that were happy to meet and have a short chat with their fans. Some signed drumheads sold quickly at their booth as well. I was disappointed that Autumn Burn didn’t bring any merchandise out. That’s a good way to make a little extra change at a gig.

Kicking off the show was Red Tide Rising. These guys are one of the better local bands I’ve seen. Their performance and attire were great. They didn’t look or act like a local band. I was very impressed. The sound was a little off due to the sound guy, which is disappointing. The low ends were too high and the vocals too low. I hate when opening bands get the shaft with lighting and sound. The lead singer’s mic was an awesome retro looking metal microphone. Red Tide Rising have some good musicians in the band and played with some backing tracks. That went flawlessly as it could have been bad if they got off beat with them. Energy wise they started a bit slow but picked it up as they got settled in on stage. There were very few people to start but the crowd filled in during their set and seemed to enjoy what they were hearing.

Autumn Burn came down from Fort Collins to spread their foot print. I’ve never heard of them before and honestly they rubbed me the wrong way to start. I can’t put my finger in it, maybe they come off as pompous. But they quickly surprised me and changed my mind. They have some awesome lit up signs on both sides of the stage. The drumset looked pretty fantastic and expensive with a variety of objects to pound on. Beyond that, I’d like to see better stage attire. As they say, “fake it till you make it”. The lead guitarist/singer had technical problems right out the gate. I applaud him with a nice recovery. Being able to swap out a cord while not missing lyrics or compromising sound. Such are the woes when you are a band with no roadies to help. Speaking of the frontman, he’s the best I’ve seen in Colorado. Great voice, charismatic, and fantastic guitar work. Overall their sound is tight, fast paced with technical guitar work. I’d definitely see Autumn Burn again.

Finally, Buckcherry! When these guys are healthy they never disappoint. I love their kind of rock ‘n’ roll and it is best served live. The floor had mostly filled in by their start time. There wasn’t a dull moment in the set and everything sounded amazing. Josh Todd killed it on the mic and danced his ass off. Guitarists Keith Nelson and Stevie D. shredded all night. Xavier Muriel was an animal on the drums as usual. New blood Kelly LeMieux continues to fit right in with the rest of the group on bass. Buckcherry played all their hits with the crowd loving it. Josh Todd exchanged some banter with some impatient ladies saying, “You’ve been to our shows. You know I’m going to eventually take my shirt off. Hold on.”

This was exactly what I wanted out of a show, great rock bands and a great time. I urge people to get out and see Red Tide Rising and Autumn Burn. They are some awesome local talent. Buckcherry was fantastic, high energy. Josh Todd forecasted that they have a new CD coming soon, this fall, called Rock N Roll. Can’t wait for that and their next tour. See you all there.
