REVIEW: CHARM CITY DEVILS & TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION 8/14/2012

Cute animal costumes —wielding instruments – pummeling each other – and singing death metal. This was the start of your $5 Tuesday night entertainment. Summit Music Hall hosted Extreme Turbo Smash, No 1 Left Standing, Texas Hippie Coalition, and Charm City Devils. For the price, you just can’t beat this show. It was very entertaining and a great turn out for a Tuesday night.

Extreme Turbo Smash
Denver band, Extreme Turbo Smash is one of those bands you have to see at least once. They have pretty entertaining stage antics and don’t take themselves too seriously. While you are laughing at them bash into each other and throw things from the stage, notice that the music manages not to falter. This is in part due to their ability to recover musically at any point but also that the music isn’t overly complex. When you experience these guys, make sure to keep your head up because school supplies, silly string, or a man in a panda suit might come flying your way.

No 1 Left Standing
No 1 Left Standing is the recent Denver band to make a lot of waves in the local scene. I’ve seen these guys multiple times and can’t say I’ve been disappointed. They are getting better and better at their craft and are certain to go places. They’ve taken rap/rock and made it heavier and unlike the rest. Their highlight of the evening was singing a cover with a local attorney that often graces 106.7 KBPI airwaves with legal advice. Look for these guys to open for multiple big name bands and probably climb up the lineup rungs.

Big Dad Ritch of Texas Hippie Coalition
If Pantera had a pot smoking cousin, it would be Texas Hippie Coalition. These are some southern boys who like weed and heavy rock ‘n’ roll. They are fronted by the biggest, baddest, biker, Texas boy I’ve ever seen. Their stage presence is awesome. They play great, energize the crowd, and really make you feel good about being there. The southern charm really comes out, and Big Dad Ritch makes you feel like a bad ass. They’ve invented Red Dirt Metal which I can only explain as Pantera and Lynyrd Skynyrd having a love child out in the country. Their new CD Peacemaker should be in your collection for sure!

Charm City Devils really brought it with their sophomore album Sins. They are on fire with their single Man Of Constant Sorrow, which is all over KBPI here in Denver. Also, their second single, Unstoppable, has been played on WWE and will be featured on the radio very soon. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing this Baltimore band a couple times and love the road they are on. Their new slew of music is angry, dark, and gritty. I like every song on the album. CCD had a great performance with lots of energy and each song sounded great live. Front man John Allen had great rapport with the audience. They are very interactive with their fans and very appreciative. Summit was their last stop on a long tour, and they just wanted to hang out and meet every person that came to the show. They signed merch and had conversations with you. These guys are very down to Earth, and I recommend seeing them live. You will enjoy every song, want more, and crave their friendship.

Overall, the concert was a good line up and a great price. The opening bands woke you up from working all day. Then, the rest of the bands kept you energized and wanting more – keeping you from getting ready for work the next day. I recommend seeing each band anytime you get a chance. Rock on!
