REVIEW: CHEVELLE & TURBOGEIST 10/3/2012
Gweedo

The Ogden Theatre is a cool place to see bands perform because the stage still has the old time theatre look. Chevelle and Turbogeist were a lot of fun and played well. The show started out slow with a really short line, but everyone trickled in by the time Turbogeist hit the stage. The one problem with The Ogden is that the area for merchandise is awful. It is at the front of the venue where people enter, next to the bar, and is in a very small area. This causes a lot of congestion. Chevelle was selling their latest CD, Hats Off To The Bull, autographed. The show could have been a little better had there been more than two bands, even if it was a local band opening.

Turbogeist is a pretty cool little punk grunge band from the UK. They didn’t really seem to fit with Chevelle but still put on a good set. As a four piece, they are what I would expect to come out of the punk scene in the UK. Their stage was very simplistic with just a Turbogeist banner behind them. The band members were very nice guys. They met who ever wanted to talk with them, even in transit to watch Chevelle. They hung out by the merch booth to meet as many people as they could.

I’m always impressed with Chevelle. This three piece has full sound with great guitar and bass lines. It sounds like there are more instruments are up there than really are. They are very talented and can own a stage. Big or small, l they manage to occupy it and move around quite a bit. Their stage was simple with some gold lit pillars spread around and a giant bull, center stage, in front of a Chevelle banner. They had an unconventional set up with the drums far off to stage right. The set list sent you on a nice roller coaster of slow and fast paced songs – playing all the hits from their catalogue. They came off as very cool, humble, and appreciative.  Numerous times, they threw water into the crowd to keep everyone hydrated. At the end, they came back out for a very high energy encore to send everyone on their way.

The show was good. Like I said earlier, it would have been a lot nicer to have more bands present, especially for the money. The Ogden is a great intimate venue to see bands. Be sure to catch Chevelle, and hopefully, you will be as impressed as I am.
