REVIEW: EVE 6 - SPEAK IN CODE 3/15/2013
Gweedo

I know this album has been out for almost a year, but I don’t think it is getting the attention it deserves. There’s always skepticism when a band breaks up for a while and comes back together. Are they going to be the same? Are they going to stay together? Will they still have that same magic? Skeptics and questions were silenced with three words, Speak In Code. After an eight year break, the Eve 6 originals entered the studio and produced this gem. The album is a spectacular addition to their discography. It seems that the break energized the band and it shows. At the core, you can hear the old Eve 6 that we all came to know and love, but just as we all matured, so have they and their sound.  There is a lot more production put into their new songs; it really enhances the tracks and is not over done. I consider it one of those bad day therapy CD’s. Put this through your speakers, and your problems start melting away. Eve 6 take relatable problems and back them with an awesome beat. Every song is unique, refreshing, and never lets up.

So, what keeps you listening over and over again? Well, besides what I mentioned above, each song pulls you in more and more. Right out of the gate, each track has you singing along by the end of it. The more you sing along and listen, the more the lyrics really sink in. Speak In Code has a lot of strife undertones. It’s a struggle album. There was a lot to be said about relationships of all kinds, and it comes across as very personal. Lead singer and bassist Max Collins has awesome lyrical prowess. He takes issues and gives them a tongue in cheek approach. There are great hooks in every song and a lot of times, the lyrics could stand on their own because they’re so melodic. A perfect example of this is in one of my favorite songs, “Situational Infatuation”. At points in the song, Collins has little instrumental backing and highlights the flow of his lyrics. When everyone comes in strong, it is extremely upbeat. On many of the other songs, the instrumentals could really stand on their own as well. Collins has a lot of great walking and melodic bass parts that stand out. Drummer Tony Fagenson does well at filling and laying down a solid beat. Then, there’s Jon Siebels that has awesome guitar riffs and a unique sound both lyrically and instrumentally. Being a three-piece, they all have to contribute as much as they can with their instruments. Unlike some three-pieces, Collins is such a strong talented lyricist that they don’t have to be afraid of dropping out. Everything complements each other wonderfully.
As for singles, it had to be a hard decision. Every song is a single.  There is no filler on this album, but officially, “Victoria” and “Curtain” are the singles with videos.  Not surprisingly, they are the first two tracks on the CD. “Curtain” gets Speak In Code going and has a driving beat. Lyrically, it seems to tell the story of a band breaking up and could possibly be about their break up. Next, “Victoria” gets you moving as Collins comically describes the inner strife he went through when his girlfriend at the time went on a girls only vacation. It really sets the stage that Eve 6 wasn’t at all afraid to enhance their sound and get personal. Following that, the band gets even more adventurous with their sound in “Situation Infatuation” which I explained above. I’m not going to go in depth on each song, but it is easy to speak praise of each one. The tracks touch on relationships with friends, girlfriends, friend’s girlfriends, and society.
Eve 6 nailed it with Speak In Code. There’s not one bad song on this album. The songs stick with you and have you either singing them or humming them throughout your day. I hope the band can stay together and produce more quality music. I highly recommend you go buy this album and support the band. If you aren’t totally sold with this review, they are actually streaming the CD in its entirety here. Enjoy!
