REVIEW: EVERCLEAR, EVE 6, & NAMESAKE 11/11/2012

Oh 90’s… I have such love for the 80’s that I often overlook the highlights of the 90’s. Everclear and Eve 6 were here to kindly remind you. It was a cold night – perfect for cramming into Ogden Theatre with a bunch of strangers. The crowd looked mostly of late teens to mid 30’s. It started out pretty sparse for Namesake but got full by the end of Eve 6. Nostalgic is a good word to describe the evening. Everclear and Eve 6 were some of the better things to come out of the 90’s.

Namesake
Namesake is a talented young band from Atlanta, GA. Lively, poppy, and rockin’ come to mind as I reminisce about the evening. They warmed everyone up and kept them energized. The crowd seemed pleasantly surprised by their set. They slipped in a Bon Jovi cover to get the attention of first timers and to get them back into the music. Their frontman had a nice, soft quality voice that reminded me of Simple Plan. They had some merchandise at the front and were eager to meet their Denver fans and make new ones.

Eve 6
Eve 6 – what a great come back. They took their little break and it seemed like they just hit the ground running. Their sound was really tight and on. The band looked very good and refreshed, although I don’t recall frontman and bassist Max Collins being so damn tall. Not sure where you get skinny jeans that long. They were very appreciative of the fans, especially since nothing had come out in five years. The set was a great reminder of all the hits they have. Collins had his step dad play bass for a couple songs, which was cool. They are one of the better sounding three pieces out there these days, and I’m glad they came back together. Overall, they sounded just like they did a decade ago. Speak In Code is the new CD they just released, and it has some catchy songs, as you would expect. After their set, they meet fans and were very nice. They had a few shirts and their new CD for sale.

The show came to a climax as Everclear hit the stage. They had an all new lineup except for frontman Art Alexakis. Art looked great for being 50. It almost looked like someone plucked him out of a music video from the 90’s. His voice wasn’t 100% though; it was raspy and not that nice smooth tone he used to have. I’m not sure if that is due to his age or if he was just having a bad night. The band performed well with energy and lots of talent, but the songs didn’t sound the same as the old lineup. It is crazy how many hits they have. Art is a great songwriter. Alexakis came out for a small acoustic set and threatened to play “Free Bird” due to a request, advertising his skills. Recently, they released a new CD, Invisible Stars, with the current lineup. They came out for an encore and wrapped up the evening with a meet and greet. Everyone in the band was very happy to talk to you, know your name, and just connect with you. It was one of the better meet and greets I’ve taken part in. One disappointing aspect was really merchandise. They were lacking in this department. They had a couple shirts but nothing for you to buy to have them sign. The big letdown was that they didn’t have any of their new CDs available.

I was really happy to see these bands, and the Ogden was a great place to do it. The fan base was really strong with the turn out. They all did a great job on trying to rebuild their following and show fans they care. I hope they continue to regain their popularity, produce more music, and perform more shows.
