REVIEW: INTERTWINED - ATTEST 12/9/2012

Go buy this CD! The End.

Alright, perhaps you’d like a little more information than that. I spent a couple of weeks listening to Intertwined’s ATTEST nonstop. You really need to embrace a CD to catch all the nuances, and I thoroughly enjoyed this CD. ATTEST is Intertwined’s third album over eight years. That is impressive for a local band. This little Grand Junction, CO band is trying to catapult their way into the national market, and this is definitely a CD that will help them reach that goal. It is my opinion that they should relocate to Denver to have more opportunities to increase their fan base. I could see some of these songs being played on Denver’s 106.7 KBPI. It is definitely a CD to be proud of as a band.

ATTEST has a nice mix of slower and heavy songs. The production on it is great; all the parts are clear and sound good. There is a perfect mix of clean and growling vocals. Singer Jeremiah Campbell’s vocals are solid and strong. His growls really enhance each track and help convey the emotion that is behind the lyrics. Speaking of Campbell’s growl, I think it is quality. It is gritty and in your face, yet you can still understand the words. Lyrically, the CD reminds me of Mushroomhead and musically, a grittier, faster Disturbed. One issue I had with the CD is that the tracks seem very short. Average track time is 3:30, but some of the songs seemed like they could have had one more verse. The beginning of “Cliffhanger” seemed like it could have been a nice bridge in “Broken Glass”. It actually fits so nicely that it took about the fourth or fifth listen of the album to realize they were two separate songs.
The guitar parts of Colin Cummings and Jesse Ortiz are tight. They have some nice grit and chug to them. I really like the bass parts by Barak Erwin as well. Most of the time, the bass is just there to add some bottom end, but Erwin takes it the next step and throws in some great walks and melodies. I particularly like the groove that is added to “Kloe Rose” and the walks in “My Eyes Say it All”. It is a tough call, but I think my favorite track is “Broken Glass”. I like how there are some parts where everything drops out except the lyrics and a guitar, yet it comes back hard during the chorus with a wall of sound.  I also like the roller coaster of growling and clean vocals throughout the song. My least favorite song is “Nevermind”, which is the bonus track to the CD. There is something I can’t put my finger on about the lyrics and chorus. Perhaps something is slightly out of key.
Overall, it is a great CD I would recommend. I consider it comfort rock; when you need solid rock to get some anger out to or just jam out to, this is a go to. I wouldn’t consider this one of those CD’s you have to be “in the mood” for. The negatives I said about the album were nit-picks, and I didn’t hear anything glaringly wrong. Often times, while listening to it, I forgot that Intertwined is a local band which attests to the quality of the production and the quality of the band.
