REVIEW: LEATHERWOLF, SOUL CRUSHER, & MICHAEL MORROW 4/20/2013
Gweedo

My first venture to Jammin' Joe's did not disappoint. It is a small bar that is probably about the size of the Marquis Theater. What brought me out was the lineup. Wolf Pack Productions brought in Leatherwolf, Soul Crusher, and Michael Morrow and The Firewater Rock ‘n’ Roll Medicine Show. Joe's resides in a shopping center. It has a dance floor in front of the stage and a bar along the side. From the sound booth back were tables and pool tables. The ticket price was a steal. Their sound was great for a small bar, and I did not feel like I was going deaf.

Michael Morrow and The Firewater Rock ‘n’ Roll Medicine Show is an excellent three piece. Guitarist and lead singer Michael Morrow played amazing and had a good voice. Bassist Jeff Sekera also played well and sang backups. They are a very solid band and knew exactly what they were doing, rocking right out of the gate. Morrow had nice guitar solos. Drummer Ed was celebrating his last night with the band. After a champagne toast, he had a great drum solo. The band had a four song EP for sale.

I opted to get the Meet and Greet for Leatherwolf because I am a huge fan. This took place before Soul Crusher came on. Meeting them was surreal. These days, only two originals remain. It was not rushed, but they did not say much. The guys really liked my old Leatherwolf shirt from the 80's. They wished they would have kept some for themselves, and I am certain people wish they would reprint it. Photo ops and autographs were welcome; they were nice guys. Not a lot people took advantage of this Meet and Greet.

Soul Crusher started rocking while the Meet and Greet was finishing up, and I got to see them play a couple songs. They are a fantastic 80's cover band. Singer Chris Romeo is extremely talented, and he show cases this in his variety of local bands. In this one, he also played guitar. Another highlight is bassist Paul Carman who keeps a solid bottom line. He is also in a couple good local bands, but his real claim to fame is his time spent playing with Leatherwolf in the 80's. Soul Crusher was definitely a crowd favorite.

Even looking passed the 80's nostalgia, Leatherwolf was outstanding. They sounded exactly like their CDs. For this portion, a chunk of the crowd finally left their seats and came to the front of the stage. Singer Michael Olivieri is fantastic at all he does. He complained about the altitude, but you could not tell it was affecting him. Guitarist Rob Math had great solos. As expected, Dean Roberts was a beast on the drum set. Patrick Guyton was good on bass as well. You are not at a Leatherwolf show until there is a Triple Axe Attack. For the unaware, this is when Mike picks up a guitar, and you have Math and guitarist Greg Erba shredding. It is awesome. Mike even handed me his pick. Their set was pure energy; every song was a hit. They played only two songs off their newer CD New World Asylum. For the encore, Guyton stepped aside and alum Paul Carman stepped in. This was an excellent surprise. Nothing against Guyton but during that song, there was a certain kind of magic and energy. I feel honored to have seen Carman up there. This was the second night of their tour and only had some minor guitar glitches and a problem with one of the cymbals. Both were hardly noticeable by the audience.

After Leatherwolf, they raffled off a signed Leatherwolf drum head that I was ecstatic to win! Leatherwolf's merchandise booth was pretty good. They had all their major records on CD and two t-shirts. Unfortunately, they were older shirts. So, they only had L and XL left. I ended up dropping $100 on merch. They also brought out a tour poster and hung out signing items afterward. Patrick came and handed me a set list that I was very appreciative of and had everyone sign.

Personally, this was one of my favorite shows this year. Wolf Pack Productions did a great job putting on a cheap show with a Meet and Greet. Jammin' Joe's turned out to be a cool venue, and all the bands entertained. There needed to be more people in attendance, but the people that showed up thoroughly enjoyed it. Leatherwolf is out touring in support of a new live CD Unchained. They didn't have any for sale, but they are planning on coming back through October 12th. I really hope this tour reinvigorates them, and they start writing new music. The fans are hungry. If you get the chance, go out of your way to see each of these bands.
