REVIEW: OPETH - SORCERESS - 9/30/2016

If you're close minded and like listening to the same three chords over and over let me stop you right here. Re-evaluate your life and come back later. Ok, now that we got rid of all the squares let me delight your ear holes with some new original sounds. Opeth. Yeah they used to play Swedish death metal but it's time to wake up because these guys have left that in the rear view. Now pumping out experimental progressive jazz rock they released Sorceress, their 12th album. I don't want to lead you too far astray. This is definitely a "need to be in the mood for" type of record but that doesn't make it any less good. In my opinion it is best enjoyed as I am; unwinding at the end of the day in your thoughts with a cold beverage. It demands to be absorbed, digested, and appreciated. Get it on vinyl if you have the chance.

Diving more into the musicality of it all, the tracks are pretty good. I can't put my finger on it but they've managed to make every track sound different yet something meshes all the songs to sound great as an album. I'll single out a few tracks. Of course the two singles are noteworthy; "Will O The Wisp" and "Sorceress". I am a sucker for picked acoustic licks and soaring electric solos both of which are featured in "Will O The Wisp". "Sorceress" is just a fun song to start with then has a heavy, driving, grungy feel. It really reminds me of Volbeat. To add to the eclectic nature of the album, "A Fleeting Glance" has a mix of guitar work and keyboards. Also, "Strange Brew" is one of those tracks where Opeth really lets the music just air out to begin with and then gets very progressive and chaotic for 8:45. Credit is due vocally too. Every song is laced with clean engaging harmonies.
Finally, the artwork, come on, awesome. In a digital world I still appreciate care being given to album art especially since I still buy all the physical CDs I can. Go give these Swedes a listen. After decades of rocking, Opeth is still getting people excited especially with their 12th album Sorceress. I really enjoyed checking it out and found that I discovered something new in each song with every listen. Like I said it is an album that I think you need to immerse yourself in to full appreciate. Enjoy and always look out for new music.
