REVIEW: PUDDLE OF MUDD, JUDD HOOS, & LOST POINT 11/16/2012

The attendance of Puddle of Mudd at Grizzly Rock marks the biggest name to come through that venue to date. I can’t wait to see what future acts they can pull in. All around, this show was pretty awesome. The evening was kicked off with local band Lost Point followed by Judd Hoos. The crowd piled in fairly early, making it hard to get a beer by the end of Lost Point.

Lost Point
This is the second time I’ve seen Lost Point, and they really redeemed themselves with me. I didn’t see the previously negative attitude on stage, and they had a great performance. A lot of people were there to support them – some even giving up prime locations just because Lost Point’s set was over. The stage was packed. I felt bad for them because they really didn’t have any room. It was so bad that they ended up using Judd Hoos’ drumset. They had a great stage presence for a local band, and their image is one of the better in the city. It is hard to take a band seriously on stage if they look like slobs, and that’s not the case here. Also, their merchandise was very good this go around. I liked how they had a framed shirt display for easy transportation and aesthetic presentation.

The Judd Hoos were a nice addition to this line up. They are a little band out of Sturgis, South Dakota. Their performance was really nice. There was a lot of energy up there, and it seemed like they had a range of ages up on stage. There can be issues but you can get a wide range of musical influences. Their lead guitarist had a wonderful stage presence and just shredded. I was not a fan of the rhythm guitarist, but I probably have to attribute that to him hitting me in the face with the head of his guitar. Even with that contact, I had to experience many more near hits afterwards. He came off as very arrogant. Their drummer was really solid and had a pretty big set. Judd Hoos played a mix of their own songs and some covers from the 80’s and 70’s. They only played some of the covers in their entirety while others were only a short melody of them. For a newer band, they had some nice merchandise, like 8x10’s and guitar pick necklaces.

Puddle of Mudd is an awesome rock band. Pretty much, with their sound and Wes Scantlin’s voice, you can pick out a song as being theirs. On top of that, they really have some great hits. As of late, some new music is to be desired and is in the works. Wes came out as you would expect – d-runk. I have to credit him though because as trashed as he was, it took till the end of the show for him to start messing up lyrics. For the most part, the audience and even the band couldn’t understand what he was saying in between songs, but when it came to the song, he was dead on. I assure you this wasn’t due to a voice track of any kind. He’s a big fan of Coors Light and embraced that relationship this evening. The band recently added on a lead guitarist that Wes normally played the parts for. He managed to play the first two songs on lead guitar and then spent the rest of the show manning the vocals. I’m not sure what happened to Shannon Boone, the drummer, but Mika Fineo, ex-Filter, was filling the seat. Grizzly Rock was the most packed I’ve ever seen it. They had some decent merchandise – a few shirts, hat, and a CD. They also had some meet and greets after the show that could be acquired from winning or by bringing in cans of food for the food drive. I was not able to stay late at the venue, but they mentioned that they would stick around and party with everyone. They came out for an encore, and after that, Wes busted into some singing by himself. He seemed happy to give the audience any show they wanted.

The evening was pretty interesting once Puddle of Mudd hit the stage. It seems like every time they come through, they are playing at a smaller and smaller venue. Their set lacked some of the songs that I’ve heard from them previously, but I still highly recommend seeing these guys. Even with the minor lyric mess-ups, they played well. Also, Judd Hoos are a nice feel -good band, and I anticipate seeing them come through again to open for other bands. Finally, Lost Point is up and coming and should be endorsed in the local scene to get them in the bigger leagues.
