REVIEW: RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS & BAND OF SKULLS 9/27/2012
Gweedo

Well, it finally happened. Red Hot Chili Peppers came to the Pepsi Center. This was a rescheduled show from back in March, so I’ve been sitting on this ticket all year. The crowd started out small for the opening band, Band of Skulls. By the time RHCP hit the stage, the seats had filled in. It was a great concert. Band of Skulls was good, and RHCP killed it.

Band of Skulls is a little three piece band from Southampton, England. They did great filling Pepsi Center with their sound, and it wasn’t just by cranking it to 11. They have a few mainstream hits. The crowd was slow getting into them, but by the end of their set, they had people on their feet. Their sound is very mellow but good.

The stage illuminated once Red Hot Chili Peppers came out. Literally. The stage was all displays and very bright. These displays were the highest quality I’ve ever seen. They were crisp and accordioned down to make for an even cooler presentation. They sounded really good with lots of energy. Anthony Kiedis was doing great after his foot surgery, which was the cause of this show’s changed date. At one point, he hit his head. Blood was running down his face, but the show went on. I thought Flea had toned down some of his antics but was still very animated and kept clothed. Josh Klinghoffer recently broke his foot and was in a chair with a cast. You could tell that he was aching to get up and rock, and on multiple occasions was seen hopping around. This just leaves me with Chad Smith. As much as I respect this guy and how great he is as a drummer, he came into the Pepsi Center wearing a red, Red Wings jump suit. That’s just not okay.

As to be expected, it was a great show. RHCP came out for an encore, and the crowd loved it. I recommend catching these guys when you get a chance. Maybe they’ll book at Red Rocks because that would sure top this show.
