REVIEW: STONE SOUR, PAPA ROACH, & OTHERWISE 2/17/2013
Gweedo

The Fillmore Auditorium presented Stone Sour, Papa Roach, and Otherwise on a Sunday night.  This was the last stop of the tour. There was a longer line than I’ve ever seen when the doors opened. It wrapped around the block and was almost back to Colfax Ave. This venue can hold a lot of people, and all that space was needed for this show, even with the 16+ age restriction. Before Otherwise came out, the crowd was already to the sound stage, which was in the middle of the floor.

Otherwise
Speaking of Otherwise, they had a decent crowd that ended up being about half the floor area. They came out with nonstop rock. Being the opener, they had less time and just filled it with their best songs. The crowd was receptive, and they’ve been slowly building up a solid fan base here in Denver. So much so that they are planning on coming back in less than a month!  Otherwise’s performance was great, as usual. I can’t think of one bad thing to say about it. There was a lot of energy on stage, the music was awesome, and everyone was having a good time. What more could you ask for? Only one crowd member showed distaste as they threw their beer at the band, which was not at all appreciated. Towards the end of their set, lead singer Adrian Patrick came to the front of the crowd and sang with the fans. As a group, I never get tired of seeing these guys. They were very excited and grateful for the tour and the fans. They lamented about it being the end of the tour. After their set and till I left, they were at the merch booth talking to everyone and embracing their fans. It was humble and appreciated.

Now the party was really starting to cook. Leading up to Papa Roach, the floor got more and more crowded. I’d guess that the floor was almost packed full. In my mind, Papa Roach owed Denver a revisit after departing Uproar before it hit due to medical issues. You can’t fault them for the reason of departure, but that didn’t diminish the demand and the fans proved that. Their show was awesome, bottom line. This was the best performance I’ve seen from them. Papa Roach is celebrating their 20th year, and I feel like we’ve all grown with this band. They played songs that spanned the 20 years.  There were a good number of crowd surfers and at least one mosh pit. With the giant open floor, it allowed a mosh pit to break out at any place and any time. It definitely kept you on your toes as an audience member. Singer Jacoby Shaddix bounced around everywhere as you would expect. He also expressed his appreciation of the roadies and the fans numerous times. He came to the edge of the crowd to sing a couple times. One of these times, Shaddix walked the length of the barriers and then climbed up to the edge railing, singing and greeting fans. I didn’t get a time on the duration, but it seemed like they played quite a bit.

After Papa Roach, the floor almost emptied. Not sure if this was a universal bathroom and refill break or a fan base swap. Whatever the reason, by the time Stone Sour came out, a crowd had reformed. I’d say that it was slightly less but not really noticeably less. The front was definitely still packed. My guess is that this is in no means a reflection of people’s distaste for the headliner but more the fact that it was getting late on a Sunday night. The crowd had reenergized for Stone Sour as soon as they started playing. This turned out to be the best set I’ve seen from these guys. The fans loved it and were constantly cheering. When singer Corey Taylor would start to address the audience, he’d have to wait for the rawer to die down.  About the middle of the show, Taylor came out with a guitar and did a solo set, singing a few covers and some Stone Sour tunes. That was cool to see. They played a variety of their catalog, even gracing us with a few songs off their yet to be released album, House Of Gold & Bones Part 2. Just like the bands before, they played excellently. Taylor expressed how much he enjoys Denver and it is like a home away from home. He also thanked the roadies and the fans for coming out. There was mention of touring again very, very soon in support of House Of Gold & Bones Part 2. So, I would keep an eye out for that because this is a band worth seeing.

This was an excellent tour. You got three killer bands for a great price, and there was nothing disappointing about the show. I was very impressed at the energy and performance quality of the bands since this was the last show of the tour. You could tell that they are all passionate about what they do and really appreciated the opportunity to do this tour together.
