REVIEW: THE BASTARD SUNS, MF RUCKUS, & L.A.M.A. LIVE 10/13/2012
Gweedo

This was my first venture into Casselman’s Bar and Venue. It was very nice, clean, and even had bathroom attendants. What brought me to this place were performances by The Bastard Suns, MF Ruckus, and L.A.M.A. Live. This venue had a big open room with tables and a dance floor in front of a tall stage. The bar was up front and often got pretty busy. At the beginning, there weren’t many people. Slowly, people trickled in, and The Bastard Suns had a good crowd to perform to. The bands did great and were a good mix for the evening.

L.A.M.A. Live
L.A.M.A. Live kicked us off.  They are a new fusion of rock hip hop to hit the Denver music scene. With good New York rhymes and hype backed by a solid Denver rock band, they let you know the show just started. They had a group of dedicated fans that they brought along with them. During the end of their set, CD’s were passed out to the masses. People got on their feet and danced around, showing they did a good job as an opening band. This band has potential, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them pop up in more places. As they say, a Little Ambition Makes A lot (L.A.M.A.).

The next band was MF Ruckus. These guys are just an awesome new band keeping old school rock alive. They have a bad boy look and great lead singer with an 80’s sound accompanied by a shredding guitarist. Also, rhythmically, they have a good groove going. Their set consisted of some great covers and some originals. Not sure how long these guys have been around, but I only see them getting more ground in the future. They had some decent merchandise too. I particularly liked the bottle opener. Be sure to check these guys out when you get a chance.

The Bastard Suns
The Bastard Suns came out to finish our evening off. This was my third time seeing them, and every time I walk away more impressed. This little Atlanta rock/punk/Irish/reggae band really knows how to play and put on a show. Their sound is very unique, every song is groovy, they’re upbeat, and catchy. This go around they were short their rhythm guitarist. He decided to peacefully part ways to continue in a non-music direction. The Suns decided not to replace him, and with the amazing skills of their lead guitar and bassist, you didn’t even notice. Their set was a couple hours and went past midnight. The crowd loved the band and knew all the lyrics. It also seemed that a constant flow of beer, shots, and funny smelling cigarettes were handed up to the band from their fans. That leads me to a very important point; never give a band car bombs! By the time it gets to them, it is curdled! Moving on. The lead singer, Clay, leaves everything on the stage every time. Sometimes, some of that everything is spilt shots from the hard rocking. He sang and danced around till he was too drunk and tired to sing and dance around. The band came out for an encore and played a few more songs. Overall, it was just a very fun set. Denver even got graced with a new song that I can’t wait to come out on CD. I had the privilege to go back stage and converse with Clay afterwards. The rest of the band was out and about meeting all the fans. They had some good merchandise, but I was a little disappointed with their t-shirt selection based on other times they’ve come through. Also they had a unique used drum head painted by the rhythm guitarist and signed by the band that was available by donation. Within the painting is a hidden penis; see if you can spot it.

The show was great with all the bands that played. The venue was really nice, clean, and had good acoustics. I recommend catching these bands and checking out this venue when you get a chance. Can’t wait for The Bastard Suns to release another CD and come back out to Denver again. Below is a video from the evening filmed by MoBoogie.
