REVIEW: THE EPILOGUES, DARLING THIEVES, MY BODY SINGS ELECTRIC, AND TAKE TO THE OARS 10/6/2012
Gweedo

Summit Music Hall hosted a CD release party for The Epilogues. They invited Darling Thieves, My Body Sings Electric, and Take to the Oars to share the evening with them. There was a great fan turn out, and all the bands had merchandise out. The crowd was a younger crowd despite the age of the performers – mostly late teens to early 20’s. All the bands were friends and very supportive of each other. The atmosphere was upbeat and positive. My only qualm was that the lighting of the show was awful, as you can tell with the pictures. I refuse to use flash out of respect for the artist, so I did the best I could.

Take To The Oars
It was Take to the Oars’ job to kick off the evening. They connected with the crowd. The band was fun and easy going. They brought a nice soft rock vibe but still had a lot of energy and emotion. A very cool and interesting addition is that during one song the bass player donned an accordion. I’ve only seen this during a Foo Fighter performance so it was unexpected but worked well. They were very dedicated to playing this show. The lead singer’s wife was in the crowd due to bare their child at any moment. Fortunately for the performance, it did not happen during their set.

My Body Sings Electric
To continue on the show, My Body Sings Electric graced the stage. With a name like that you can assume they raised the energy level. This was done with some great upbeat music and a very energetic lead singer. This was another group of easy going guys. To me, their music came across as upbeat, poppy rock. It was enjoyable and well received by the crowd. Unfortunately, during their set they had problems keeping the bass drum on the drum stand. This caused some hiccups, but the show kept rolling.  They handled it very well.

Darling Thieves
One of my favorite bands, Darling Thieves, aka I Hate Kate, was the next up. These guys are awesome and have loads of experience from prior bands. They came all the way from California for this one-off show to help support The Epilogues with the release. The bass player was preoccupied with a new born baby, so they had a replacement stand in. Darling Thieves seem to always put on a great show. Their music has a great melody and great lyrics. There was only one glitch where the bass player didn’t know what song was next, but you really can’t fault the guy for learning the entire set in a few days. The crowd was very excited when they came out, and it appeared every soul in the room knew the lyrics to every song. Denver has become their second home and really should become their primary. They brought out a few shirts supporting their new EP, The Extended Play. I was disappointed they didn’t have more merchandise because I was anxious to buy something. Also, The Extended Play is only available online.

The Epilogues
Finally the main attraction, The Epilogues, came out to all their fans. The crowd reception was the biggest I’ve seen from a local band. By this point, a lot of people had arrived to show their support. They spent 10 long years to amass this following. Their gift to the fans was their first CD, Cinematics. I first saw these guys a couple years ago at the last I Hate Kate show in Denver, and they’ve gotten better since then and will no doubt continue. You could tell the whole band was very excited and very appreciative of the evening. Unlike some of the main stream bands out there, these guys still realize their success is due to their fans. I could definitely tell that the crowd was anticipating this day. The band had a great performance and has a unique sound. For the first time with a local band, I witnessed the crowd chant and bring them back out to the stage for an encore.

The evening was great. It really showcased some great local bands and the support they have. Also, you could see that there are still decent people out there. A lot of people lent a helping hand to make the evening happen. I recommend checking all these bands out and someone should get a petition going around to get Darling Thieves to relocate.
