REVIEW: TWINS OF EVIL ROB ZOMBIE, MARILYN MANSON, & DJ STARSCREAM 10/2/2012

When I heard about this tour, I thought I was dreaming. Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson? No way… Well, way – and way awesome. Two artists that love stage presence and treat their shows as more of a theatrical performance than just a rock show is a sight to see. JDevil was supposed to open, which was a little odd, but still would have been interesting. Due to Korn’s heavy touring schedule, Jonathan Davis was too exhausted to hop right onto the Twins Of Evil tour. So, his replacement was DJ Starscream. This isn’t a plug and play DJ situation. Their styles are drastically different. The lines to get into the venue were extremely long, and by the end of DJ Starscream’s set, the floor was packed with people.

DJ Starscream, also known as Sid Wilson of Slipknot, was alright. I respect his music, but it just wasn’t for me. To be honest, it wasn’t really for most people there. They left the house lights on, and everyone just stood around not knowing what was going on. This was just the wrong event for him. He did do some scratching on the turn tables that was cool, but it was mostly computer beats with samples, pitch tweaks, and speed tweaks. I kind of expected a much different set from him since the backing to Slipknot’s music is really good. You couldn’t tell if there were individual songs being played or if his entire set was just different beats and samples being intertwined. I’m pretty ignorant to this music style, so it is hard to say. He didn’t don his Slipknot mask but instead had on a light up Transformers helmet due to his love for the franchise.

This was my second time seeing Marilyn Manson, and it was a great improvement. The costumes and set were great, and the music was a lot better. The first time was not disappointing, but he has made enhancements. Manson is looking really soft around the mid section, but age is creeping up on him. He was never known for concerns about his appearance anyway. The show was as angry and obscene as you would expect. There were nice prompt transitions between costume changes. At one point, he got shocked from one of the props, and his finger bled. In true Manson fashion, he preceded to use his blood as lip stick. The stage was littered with double cross props and changed into various little scenes, like hotel signs, a church, a giant picture of himself, and a giant antichrist superstar flag to name a few. At one point, Manson played guitar. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Colorado Marilyn Manson show if he didn’t make reference to the Columbine shooting that his music was nationally blamed for. The crowd was energized for his set and many impromptu mosh pits broke out. Everyone was getting crazy.

After the caliber of Manson’s performance, it was hard to believe that there was still another band waiting to play. I've seen Rob Zombie numerous times, and he refuses to disappoint. Idolizing Alice Cooper, he really sets to entertain you the entire time. It is amazing that, with the thin mountain air, he is still able to run and dance to each side of the stage while singing during the duration of one song. Zombie also had a few costumes but his forte lies in giant creatures that come walking and dancing onto the stage. His stage is also made up of a lot of displays that show movie clips and lyrics throughout the show. He used a lot of fire, smoke, and bubbles. This was the first time that I've seen fire balls that shoot diagonally. Zombie is really good at making music that has a good beat you can dance to. The crowd was always moving, but surprisingly, there weren't as many mosh pits. There was one big one from what I could see. To the crowd’s dismay, Zombie informed us that they did not get a very good review out of Salt Lake City, saying they lacked shock factor. I’m not sure what show they were at, but this show was great. I would expect a show like this to be very shocking for a town like Salt Lake City. Zombie had great crowd interaction too. Fresh off filming The Lords Of Salem, he graced us with a trailer that was impressive. Johnny 5 had a great solo set to show off his excellent skills, and to everyone’s delight, Zombie came out for an encore.

Overall, this tour is really amazing. I recommend seeing it when it makes its way to your town. The opener isn't the best, but I’m sure there are some people who were super excited about it. The production level of the show is very high, and I feel like you get your money’s worth. I am not sure if they sold out, but the entire place looked packed from seats to floor.
