REVIEW: WARRANT 7/28/2012

The place: Grizzly Rock.

The day: July 28th.

The event: a good ol’ fashion rock show!

What better way to spend a Saturday night than at a sweaty rock ‘n’ roll show? 80’s power house, Warrant, and Guns ‘N’ Roses cover band, Paradise City took the stage at the newly opened Grizzly Rock. The venue was perfect, and the show was great. There were even signed Warrant Grizzly Rock event posters available.

The crowd came to the doors with energy to rock. Paradise City had no problem seizing this energy and amplifying it. They are from Kansas City, MO and have been touring nationwide since 2000. These boys were able to deliver all the hits without a rhythm guitar – furthering their musicality. Their quality, energy, and crowd interaction set the stage for Warrant for sure.

This is my 3rd time seeing Warrant, and somehow, every time is exponentially better. My only qualm with the situation is that I keep seeing them in small venues. These venues are great from a fan perspective, but their stage presence, power, and sound belong in a much bigger venue. This is a band that needs to return to their former glory; with the acquisition of lead singer Robert Mason, this seems like a possibility. The recently released, Rockaholic, is the first with Mason. The crowd was introduced to some of this material, and personally, I thought it was great. Joey Allen shredded the guitar all night giving the crowd exactly what they wanted. Mason nailed the lyrics, kept everyone entertained by bouncing all over the stage, and twirling his steering wheel based mic stand. Rhythm section, Erik Turner, Steven Sweet, and Jerry Dixon filled in all the gaps and created a solid sound. For this being the last stop on a long tour I was thoroughly impressed and they definitely seem like rockaholics.

Grizzly Rock looks like a great new place to see bands. I can’t wait for the next concert there. Both bands did great at the venue, and I would recommend seeing either one if you get the chance. On to the next show.
