REVIEW: WAYNE STATIC, THE DEFILED, MADLIFE, GLASS DELIRIUM, & GHOST OF IVY 12/11/2013

The Gothic Theatre brought the “evil disco” to town. Wayne Static, The Defiled, Madlife, Glass Delirium, and Ghost of Ivy rocked the old theatre walls. Gothic has awesome seating options. There’s room for a mosh pit and railings on the floor to separate you from that but still let you be close. Also if you are on the lazy side you can sit at the railing on the balcony and still have a great view. The beginning of this show didn’t have very many people though they slowly trickled in throughout. Everyone had merchandise out but hardly any of the booths had people manning them. It was another bitter cold day in Denver; luckily we didn’t have to wait outside to get in.

Opening local band, Ghost of Ivy did pretty good. The set started a little slow and mellow but they played a couple heavier songs. They are a four piece band that had a nice full sound. Their bassist was good with a five string bass. The guitarist was rocking a seven string. Their drumset looked nice. The lead singer did well with a strong dynamic voice. They played to a very small crowd and met people at their merch booth afterwards.

Finally I got the opportunity to see local band Glass Delirium. I’ve heard about them for a while but hadn’t had the pleasure till this point. I was not disappointed. They are five talented musicians that include a hot female lead singer and a sexy lady on bass delivering some solid alternative rock. Glass Delirium has a keyboardist in their lineup that is as good as he is flamboyant. There was a lot of energy coming from the stage. You were always entertained visually between the singer’s looks, the bassist’s flexibility, and the keyboardist jumping around and humping the keyboard. Their music kept your attention by playing in some interesting keys. They rocked really hard and the crowd enjoyed their performance. Often you forgot that they are just a local band. After their set they kicked it at the merch booth.

Industrial rock band Madlife took the stage next. They hail from L.A., California. These guys were awesome. Each member was very interesting to watch perform with excellent stage presence and attire. Their drummer was fantastic singing backup on some songs and doing stick tricks. They also utilized a drum machine that added some deep bottom to the songs. Your fillings were rattling in your teeth with the decibels they were pumping. At the beginning the kick drum went out and they still sounded good and just continued the song without missing a beat. They had some cool banners with a gasmask graphic on stage with them. Included in their set was a great Rob Zombie “Dracula” cover. Madelife kept the crowd going from start to finish. Unfortunately I felt like the finish came too soon. I’d like to have heard some more of their songs when they exited but as they say “leave them wanting more”.

The Defiled was the next interesting band to perform. These guys came all the way from London, England to blow some eardrums. They had a really heavy sound. Their set was short as well to fit all the music into one night. They had some good songs that got the crowd going. Their energy, stage presence, and attire were great. The guitarist and bassist wore some creepy masks. They also featured the hardest core keyboardist I’ve ever seen. He head banged, sang, and twirled and tossed the keyboard in the air. It’s impressive that the keyboard was able to take the onslaught of abuse he put it through.

Bring on the “evil disco”. Wayne Static had a fantastic show. It was exactly what I wanted to see. He played his solo songs and old Static-X hits. The Gothic really screwed up the sound though. There were three songs that didn’t have vocals. I think that is pretty unacceptable for a venue. It also bothers me because one of the songs was “Assassins Of Youth” which is one of my favorite songs from his solo work. Throughout their set a woman was dancing and dishing out shots to Wayne Static. Which I think helped him not care about the sound failure and just have a great time. The band sounded great and Wayne sounded exactly as he always has. I don’t know how someone can sing like him for so long. He had his typical spiked hair and crotch length goatee. Of course the crowd was really into it the whole time and yelling when there was no vocals. Sadly the venue seemed to only be a little less than half full but it was in the middle of the week. They had a two song encore. The band members were really nice and handed out picks and set lists after the show to some of the hardcore fans.

This show had fantastic money to music ratio, coming in at $22 a ticket. All the bands did well and I was entertained by all of them. I hope to catch some more Glass Delirium, I’m glad to see some talent like that coming out of Denver. Also I wouldn’t mind seeing Madlife again with a longer set. Of course it is hard to be disappointed with a Wayne Static performance especially when he’s playing new and old hits. I hope after this show The Gothic got some of the bugs out of their system. I haven’t seen them have this type of issue in the past. Rock on to the next.
